Our most commonly asked questions . . .

  • How is cognitive skills training different than academic instruction or tutoring?
  • Can I get this type of training at my child's school?
  • How is cognitive skills training different than academic instruction or tutoring?

Academic tutoring focuses on teaching "what" one learns, not "how" one learns.  Tutoring is effective for those who need to "catch" up in academic subject areas.  It is not a long-term solution not for those who continually struggle to learn.   EF training (cognitive processing skills) treats the cause of learning problems, not just the symptoms. For example, if  "Johnnie" is unable to remember math facts, rather than re-teach the facts over and over again , we train for an increase in memory.  Once the memory is improved the learning of math facts will be retained.

Can I get this type of training at my child's school?

Unfortunately the anwer is no.  Schools are required to focus on  academics,  not cognitive training.   Budget and time contraints do not allow for one on one instruction.  Public schools are set up to deliver instruction within groups,  limiting the ability to provide intensive individual training.  Cognitive training is beyond the scope of teachers and administrators area of expertise.
